Jazz is not background music. You must concentrate upon it in order to get the most of it. You must absorb most of it. The harmonies within the music can relax, soothe and uplift the mind when you concentrate upon and absorb it. Jazz music stimulates the minds and uplifts the souls of those who play it was well as of those who listen to immerse themselves in it. As the mind is stimulated and the soul uplifted, this is eventually reflected in the body.

Being rich is not about how much money you have or how many homes you own; it’s the freedom to buy any book you want without looking at the price and wondering if you can afford it.

Wilco Songbook is a must have for fans. I’m having a blast playing songs from this anthology. The 152-page songbook features easy arrangements for piano/guitar. It includes 27 songs from Wilco’s first five albums - AM, Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and A Ghost is Born.

‘Straight, No Chaser’ by Thelonious Monk

The Thelonious Monk Quartet with Charlie Rouse lasted eleven years. October 31st and November 1st, 1964 at the It Club in Los Angeles were just two more nights out of thousands for them, except when it comes to Monk, there were no ordinary nights.

Rouse in his sixth year with Monk had hit his stride, truly becoming Monk’s musical alter ego. Remarkably, drummer Ben Riley had joined the quartet at the beginning of 1964 and bassist Larry Gales had only logged in a month at the time of this taping; yet they already show the first signs of collective greatness on these evenings.

Monk was at a particular high point pianistically during this gig; in fact, he went into a Los Angeles studio and recorded the album ‘Solo Monk’ on the afternoons preceding and following the live taping.

Baby, courtesy of Mick Jagger’s voice.

It’s 33 “baby”s in 40 seconds. I obviously didn’t put every “baby” Mick has ever said, but press play and deal with it.

Love/Arthur Lee/Baby Lemonade – ”Feathered Fish”

I love how the guitar solo gets punched out in the mix. Actually, I love just about everything about this recording.

Information on it is scarce, conflicting and mostly officially disavowed. Best guess is that this was a song written by Arthur Lee for Love, which he instead gave to Sons Of Adam, which had the effect of causing Sons Of Adam drummer Michael Stuart to defect to the Love camp shortly thereafter. Then nearly twenty years pass. In 1994 Lee records the above version with Baby Lemonade, who were Love whenever Lee wasn’t doing some hurt piece for the State of California. It’s put on on a 7” in 1996 by Italian bootleg label LSD Records as compensation owed the label by Lee for a previous project. Later, the track surfaced on the comprehensive boot “Black Beauty & Rarities.”

For those wondering about the other tracks on the 7”, “It’s The Marlin, Baby” was a 1964 track from Lee’s then group, The American Four, and “Gethsemene” is a short remix of Love’s “The Red Telephone” mostly played backwards.
